Sustainable events are no longer a voluntary gesture for companies. They are an expectation: from guests, from staff and often from your own management too. Anyone planning an event today gets asked how sustainable it really is. And rightly so.
The good news: a responsible event doesn’t have to mean going without. On the contrary, many sustainable choices make an event more personal, more local and more coherent. It is not about bans but about making conscious decisions in the right places.
Venue: short journeys, double benefit
Choosing the venue is by far the biggest lever. A central venue that is easy to reach by public transport cuts travel, and with it most of the CO₂ footprint. Also look for venues that already focus on energy efficiency and local roots. A place with its own history tells a better story, too.
Catering: seasonal, local, no leftovers
Food is where you can make the most visible difference, and guests usually enjoy it more. Go for seasonal and local produce, a noticeable share of plant-based dishes and realistic quantities, so half-eaten buffets don’t end up in the bin. Practical levers:
- local producers instead of anonymous wholesalers
- plant-based options given prominence, not hidden away
- realistic quantities, with leftovers passed on sensibly
- no disposable tableware or individually packaged portions
Materials and logistics: less, but better
Much of what is produced for events lives for one evening only. Ask yourself about every element: do we really need this, and what happens to it afterwards? Hire rather than buy, use reusable decoration and choose materials you can use again at the next event. Digital invitations and programmes save printing, and for branding it pays to use undated elements that can be used more than once.
Travel: the underestimated factor
At many events, most of the environmental impact isn’t created on site but on the way there. Choose dates and places so that as many people as possible can come by public transport, promote the connections actively and, where needed, organise shared transfers instead of lots of individual journeys. That spares not only the environment but often your guests’ nerves too.
Sustainable events: impact, not a label
Sustainability at an event isn’t a label you stick on. It is an attitude that shows in many small decisions. It is most convincing when guests don’t see it as doing without at all, but as a natural part of a well-rounded event. Want to plan your next event consciously and effectively?
